- Women with PCOS are often less likely to become pregnant due to infrequent ovulation, accompanied by infrequent or completely absent menstruation.
- The intake of myo-inositol, folic acid and vitamin D can also be useful to promote regular ovulation and increase the likelihood of successful conception and implantation.
- As a component of cell membrane phospholipids, myo-inositol plays an important biochemical role in the transmission of signals in various hormonal processes, such as insulin and FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) regulation. It leads to positive effects on insulin resistance and fat and glucose metabolism as well as to a reduction in androgen levels. An increasing number of physiological and clinical studies show that the substance could be of particular interest in some insulin-dependent processes such as PCOS or metabolic syndrome or gestational diabetes or as an additive treatment in IVF cycles to improve egg and sperm quality1.
- Myo-inositol is produced in the body from D-glucose and also occurs naturally in many animal and plant tissues and can therefore also be obtained from food.
- Supplementation of myo-inositol can be useful for women with PCOS and/or the desire to have children, as a study has shown that a 6-month intake of 4 g myo-inositol and 400 μg folic acid daily can help to restore normal ovulation in women with PCOS.
- Women with PCOS who want to get pregnant should, like any woman who wants to have children, pay particular attention to an adequate supply of folic acid. Folic acid is an essential vitamin from the B group (vitamin B9).
- Although it is abundant in green leafy vegetables, among other things, it is easily destroyed due to its high sensitivity to light and heat. As a result, there is often no optimal supply.
- As a rule, an additional 400 micrograms per day is recommended if you wish to have children.
- Compared to the normal population, women with PCOS and/or fertility disorders are more likely to have a vitamin D deficiency. Recent studies underline the importance of an adequate supply of this important vitamin for female fertility in order to increase the probability of successful conception and implantation, e.g. in the case of in vitro fertilisation (IVF).
