OSTENIL® PLUS sodium hyaluronate from fermentation 2.0%. Viscoelastic solution for injection into the joint space. Sterile due to moist heat.

Indications

• Pain and restricted mobility in degenerative and traumatic changes of the knee joint and other synovial joints.

Properties and mode of action

• Synovial fluid, which is viscoelastic due to its hyaluronic acid content, is found in all synovial joints, where its lubricating and shock-absorbing properties ensure normal, pain-free movement. It is also responsible for supplying the joint cartilage with nutrients. In degenerative joint diseases, such as osteoarthritis, the viscoelasticity of synovial fluid is significantly impaired, which reduces its lubricating and shock-absorbing effect. As a result, the mechanical load on the joint and the degradation of the joint cartilage increase to such an extent that pain and limited mobility occur in the affected joint. Improving the quality of the synovial fluid by intra-articular administration of high-purity hyaluronic acid can improve the viscoelastic properties of the synovial fluid.
• This improves its lubricating and shock-absorbing effect and reduces the mechanical overloading of the joint. The result is usually a reduction in pain and an improvement in joint mobility, which can last for several months after a treatment cycle. OSTENIL® PLUS is a clear solution of natural high-purity sodium hyaluronate, which is obtained by fermentation and is therefore free from animal proteins. OSTENIL® PLUS is also stabilised by the addition of mannitol, a free radical scavenger. In biocompatibility studies, OSTENIL® PLUS has proven to be particularly well tolerated.

Application form

Inject OSTENIL® PLUS into the diseased joint 1-3 times at weekly intervals. Several joints can be treated at the same time. Repeated treatment cycles are possible if required. If a joint effusion is present, it is advisable to puncture the effusion, immobilise the joint and apply an ice pack and/or administer corticosteroids intra-articularly. Two to three days later, treatment with OSTENIL® PLUS is started.

As long as the sterile packaging has not been opened, the contents and surface of the OSTENIL® PLUS prefilled syringe are sterile. The prefilled syringe is removed from the sterile packaging, the cap is unscrewed from the Luer lock connection, a suitable cannula (e.g. 18 to 25 G) is attached and locked in place by turning it slightly. Before the injection, any air bubble is removed from the syringe.

Ingredients

1 ml isotonic solution (pH 7.3) contains 20.0 mg sodium hyaluronate from fermentation as well as sodium chloride, disodium hydrogen phosphate, sodium dihydrogen phosphate, mannitol and water for injection.
