Unlike conventional dummies, the NUK Sucking Trainer is a medical device. As a therapeutic tool, it plays an important role in overcoming sucking difficulties and normalising dysfunctions in oral motor skills (e.g. mouth breathing, difficulties with sucking, chewing, swallowing, speaking and facial expressions). Furthermore, it can effectively treat persistent habits such as teeth grinding, clenching of the teeth and tongue, as well as pain and clicking in the temporomandibular joints. Equally important and valuable is the speech and language therapy application of the NUK Sucking Trainer as part of breathing, voice and speech therapy. Sucking training can also be used as part of Padovan’s myotherapeutic training to replicate or repeat the natural sequence of developing perceptual and motor skills.
