The intestinal mucosa is the largest mucous membrane in the human body. It forms the innermost of a total of four layers of the intestinal wall. The intestinal mucosa is responsible for the absorption of nutrients and water, as well as for protection against unwanted intruders. No other tissue in our body has such a high rate of cell renewal as the gut. As the mucosal cells are constantly being renewed, care should be taken to ensure a regular supply of selected micronutrients to maintain a healthy mucosa.
Properties
- Contains beta-carotene, the precursor to vitamin A. Vitamin A helps maintain normal mucous membranes
- Manganese, selenium, vitamin C, copper and zinc help protect cells from oxidative stress
