The butterfly tramete is particularly well known in Asia and South America, where it grows in its natural form on dead wood or is now also cultivated. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this medicinal mushroom has long been used to treat a wide variety of conditions, such as infections and candidiasis, and has therefore already been investigated in several studies for its demonstrable medicinal effects. In Europe, the butterfly tramete medicinal mushroom was long regarded as uninteresting, as it is not suitable as an edible mushroom and, if at all, was valued only as a decorative item. However, this mushroom is now becoming increasingly popular here too and is highly valued for its nutritional content.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has valued it for many generations due to its numerous minerals, such as copper, iron, selenium, potassium and calcium, and its many vitamins.
It is particularly its high polysaccharide content – especially the two substances PSK and PSP – that make it so valuable.
