The Mölnlycke® Exufiber® Ag+ dressing effectively combats biofilm and bacteria. Thanks to Hydrolock® technology, the fibre gels, securely traps exudate and promotes wound healing. Ideal for heavily exuding wounds.
Exufiber Ag+ is a sterile, soft fibre dressing made of highly absorbent and gel-forming polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibres, coated on both sides with silver sulphate. Exufiber Ag+ has a high absorption and retention capacity for wound exudate and maintains a moist wound environment. The structural strength of Exufiber Ag+ supports removal in one piece. Upon contact with a liquid, Exufiber Ag+ releases silver ions and inactivates a variety of wound pathogens such as bacteria, fungi and moulds as demonstrated in vitro. By reducing the number of microorganisms, Exufiber Ag+ can prevent and reduce the formation of bacterial biofilm, as demonstrated in vitro and in vivo. Exufiber Ag+ can be used as an effective barrier against microbial penetration of the dressing.
Fields of application
Exufiber Ag+ is intended for medium to very heavily exuding wounds as listed below. It absorbs and retains exudate and inactivates a variety of wound pathogens.
- Ulcus cruris
- Diabetic foot ulcer
- Decubitus ulcer
Indicated wear time: up to seven (7) days.
Intended patient group: Exufiber Ag+ can be used on patients with venous leg ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers and pressure ulcers with signs of clinical infection.
Properties
- Rapid antimicrobial effect for up to 7 days (in vitro).
- Kills a wide range of pathogens including VRE and MRSA (in vitro).
- Proven to kill 99% of fungi, bacteria and viruses within 24 hours.
- Superior fluid retention.
- Highly absorbent, even under compression.
Dosage form
Sterile gel fibre dressing
How to use
Exufiber Ag+ should be used by or under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
Superficial wounds
Application:
Clean the wound with saline solution or water according to clinical standards.
- Dry the surrounding skin thoroughly.
- Select the appropriate dressing size. To achieve optimum clinical results, the product must cover the wound bed and overlap the wound edges. The dressing will swell, causing contraction of the dressing edges as it absorbs the wound fluid and begins to gel.
- Apply the dry Exufiber Ag+ dressing to the wound.
- Fix the wound with a suitable secondary dressing. The choice depends on the amount of exudate.
- Compression therapy can be used in combination with Exufiber Ag+.
Deep wounds and wound cavities
Application:
Clean the wound with saline or water according to clinical standards.
- Thoroughly dry the skin surrounding the wound.
- Fill the wound loosely with the tamponade or compress so that the dressing can still swell. When using the tamponade, cut the length according to the requirements. Allow for an overlap of 2-3 cm over the wound edge so that it can be easily removed.
- Cover the wound with a suitable secondary dressing. The choice depends on the amount of exudate.
- If necessary, fix (or cover) with a self-adhesive wound dressing or bandage.
Changing and removing the dressing
Both the wound and the dressing should be checked regularly. Exufiber Ag+ can remain on the wound for up to 7 days depending on the condition of the wound and in accordance with current clinical practice. The secondary dressing should be changed based on the amount of exudate or before full saturation.
- Remove Exufiber Ag+ by gently cleansing/rinsing with saline or water according to clinical standards. Non-gelled fibres become moist in contact with saline.
- If Exufiber Ag+ dries out and is difficult to remove, it should be moistened with saline or water according to local regulations and soaked until it dissolves easily. It may take several minutes for Exufiber Ag+ to gel. Remove the dressing by careful cleaning/rinsing. Exufiber Ag+ has not been shown to interact with detergents, oxidising agents such as hypochlorite solutions/hydrogen peroxide and topical treatments.
Remove Exufiber Ag+ before starting a radiation treatment if the product is in the area to be treated. A new dressing can be applied after treatment.
Avoid contact with electrodes or conductive gels during electronic measurements, e.g. electrocardiograms (ECG) and electroencephalograms (EEG).
Exufiber Ag+ is intended for short-term use. If silver-containing dressings are used on large wounds or for longer periods (e.g. for more than 28 days), the silver content in the serum may increase and silver may be deposited in the tissue or organs. The use of silver-containing dressings must be reviewed in the light of their current effect. Clinical evaluation by a physician is recommended for prolonged treatment. The wound should always be monitored for signs of infection. In the event of a clinical infection, healthcare professionals must be consulted. Exufiber Ag+ does not replace the need for systemic or other adequate infection treatment.
