- Coenzyme Q10 (also known as ubiquinone) is a substance produced naturally in the body and is one of the vitaminoids and, as the name suggests, ubiquinone is found everywhere.
- In addition to meat, eggs and fish, foods rich in ubiquinone include cold-pressed vegetable oils such as olive oil and wheat germ oil. As with the other vitaminoids, animal foods contain high amounts, while the content of plant products is rather low.
- The human organism has the ability to synthesise coenzyme Q10 itself, although this ability decreases with age (from the age of 40).
- The highest coenzyme Q10 concentrations in the human body are found in the heart, liver and kidneys. Coenzyme Q10 plays a key role in the formation of cellular energy (ATP) in the mitochondria of the cell.
- A good coenzyme Q10 status is a prerequisite for a physiological ATP supply to muscle cells, organs and cardiac performance. If coenzyme Q10 is deficient, energy metabolism is impaired and the oxidative load on the mitochondria is increased. It is now assumed that free oxygen radicals, which are produced during ATP production in the respiratory chain, are involved in the cellular ageing process due to their damaging effect on mitochondrial DNA.
- Coenzyme Q10 regenerates "used", membrane-bound vitamin E in a similar way to vitamin C (redox recycling) and acts as a fat-soluble antioxidant. In addition to its key function in cellular energy metabolism and in the antioxidantcell protection system, coenzyme Q10 also strengthens the immune system.
