Lutamax® AREDS 2 soft capsules offer protection against advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It is a special combination of lutein, zeaxanthin, minerals and antioxidant vitamins.

Lutamax® AREDS 2 soft capsules are used for the dietary treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). They contain a special combination of lutein, zeaxanthin, the antioxidant vitamins C and E and the trace elements zinc and copper. Lutamax® AREDS 2 soft capsules are recommended in the intermediate to advanced stages of AMD.

The basis for the development of Lutamax® AREDS 2 soft capsules was the AREDS-2 study (Age Related Eye Disease Study-2), which was conducted between 2005 and 2012 in the USA at a large number of renowned hospitals. This study demonstrated that the continuous and daily administration of lutein, high-dose antioxidants such as vitamins E and C and zinc can significantly delay the progression of AMD.

Active ingredients

• Lutein protects the visual cells from high-energy short-wave light (blue light) because it is a very efficient blue light filter. As a result, lutein reduces the risk of the formation of free radicals that can damage the retina and acts like natural sunglasses for the eye. In addition to lutein, Lutamax® AREDS 2 also contains zeaxanthin, a substance derived from lutein that has similar properties. Zeaxanthin is mainly found in the yellow spot, the central part of the retina. Both substances are natural substances and are obtained from a plant extract of the marigold flower.
• Vitamin C and E are important for the health of our eyes because they can protect the visual cells. They bind free radicals that form in the retina and thus reduce oxidative stress. As a result, the visual cells remain functional for longer.

It has been known since the late 1980s that zinc can have a positive effect on the progression of AMD. This is why it was also included in the AREDS 2 combination.

The combination and quantity of active ingredients contained in Lutamax® AREDS 2 is based on the recommendations of the AREDS-2 study (Age Related Eye Disease Study-2), which was supported by the American health authority NIH. This large study involving several thousand patients has shown that the progression of AMD can be significantly delayed by taking this particular combination of substances. Lutamax® AREDS 2 capsules should only be taken if you are already in the middle or later stages of AMD.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

Age-related macular degeneration or AMD is a disease that occurs more frequently from the age of 60. One in three 75-year-olds already show signs of the disease. The cause of AMD is ever-increasing damage to the visual cells, particularly in the central area of the retina ("macula lutea"). The combination of high-energy light radiation and large quantities of oxygen leads to the occurrence of tissue-damaging processes. These ultimately lead to deposits of harmful substances ( so-called "drusen"), which impair the further supply of nutrients to the visual cells. AMD is a slowly progressing disease, with only minor visual impairment occurring in the initial stages. As the disease progresses, vision in the centre of the visual fieldis increasingly lost.

Causes of AMD

Oxidative processes and circulatory disorders in the retina are discussed as the cause of AMD. It is also known that many AMD patients have a deficiency of lutein and zeaxanthin. It therefore makes sense to provide the body with targeted support and antioxidant substances as well as lutein and zeaxanthin . A large study published a few years ago by the American health authorities also points this out.

Antioxidants and nerve cell protection

Antioxidants offer the cells protection. They can reduce the number of free radicals and also help the cells to repair themselves. Nerve cells in particular benefit from this, as they are difficult to regenerate and can be regenerated by the body. The photoreceptors are also part of the nervous system and are therefore highly specialised nerve cells.

Application

• Continuous intake of two capsules of Lutamax® AREDS 2 daily is recommended for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) at an intermediate or advanced stage. These can either be taken together or divided into two doses (morning/evening).
• Important note: It is important to take Lutamax® AREDS 2 continuously every day. If you stop taking it or interrupt it for a longer period of time, the values in the retina and blood will drop significantly again within a few weeks. The protective effect of the substances on the eye can only be realised if they are taken continuously.

Ingredients

• Ingredients: Vitamin E (DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate), vitamin C (ascorbic acid), gelling agent (gelatine), lutein extract, zinc (zinc oxide), zeaxanthin extract, anti-caking agent (magnesium stearate), colouring agent (titanium dioxide), copper (copper(II) oxide), colouring agent (indigotine).
• One capsule contains 5 mg lutein and 1 mg zeaxanthin.
