Andrographis paniculata is also known as Kalmegh or Indian Echinacea and is occasionally referred to as the ‘king of bitter’. It is a shrub-like plant belonging to the Acanthaceae family, which usually grows to a height of 30 to 50 cm. It is characterised by its dark green, square stem and high content of bitter compounds. Due to its intense bitterness, the plant can only be consumed in small quantities when fresh or as a tea.
