What is selenium?
Selenium is one of the essential trace elements. As the body cannot produce selenium itself, we rely on obtaining it through our diet. Selenium is found in various animal and plant-based foods.
Selenium for the thyroid
Selenium plays an important role in various biochemical processes and is vital for a number of bodily functions. For example, it supports the normal functioning of the thyroid, contributes to a normally functioning immune system and protects cells from oxidative stress. It also helps maintain healthy hair and nails and supports normal sperm production.
What is selenium in the form of sodium selenite?
- Selenium occurs naturally in many different forms. Soils, for example, contain inorganic forms of selenium, which are taken up by plants and converted into organic forms.
- Sodium selenite is a highly bioavailable form of selenium thatcan be easily absorbed and utilised by the body1.
