- Omega-3 fatty acids are unsaturated fatty acids that are essential for the human body, i.e. they cannot be produced by the body itself. Omega-3 fatty acids, in particular the two most important omega-3 fatty acids for the human body, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), are found in large quantities in fatty sea fish and krill. However, these are not suitable for people with a vegan lifestyle or existing allergies to seafood etc.
- If you want to supply your body with vegan omega-3 fatty acids, you can use vegetable oils containing omega-3, such as linseed, rapeseed, soya and walnut oil. These mainly contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). The body can produce the two important omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) from this. However, ALA must first be converted into the fatty acid stearidonic acid (SDA) in order to produce EPA and DHA from it. Unfortunately, the conversion capacity of ALA into SDA is limited.
- Algae are a more ideal, but for us Europeans rather unfamiliar, plant source of omega-3 fatty acids. The marine microalgae Schizochytrium sp. is particularly suitable as it also produces the two fatty acids EPA and especially DHA. Microalgae are tiny plant-like organisms (only visible under a microscope) that consist of just one or a few cells. Schizochytrium sp. is found in coastal marine areas. It does not require light and feeds on organic and plant matter.
- Our microalgae oil is extracted and processed in Switzerland. It is a high-quality refined oil obtained from Schizochytrium sp. using a physical extraction technology without the use of organic solvents.
- The inconspicuous plant called field stonecrop (Buglossoides arvensis) also grows in our latitudes and its name also reveals its favoured location. Its seeds in particular have recently become the centre of attention, as they contain various omega-3 fatty acids. Among other things, they are rich in stearidonic acid (SDA). Our body can convert this into EPA and DHA. In this way, the oil from the field stone seed helps the body to obtain the important omega-3 fatty acids. The plant also contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).
- Our field stone seed oil is obtained from the seeds of non-genetically modified plants (GMO-free).
- Vitamin E as an antioxidant: Omega-3 Vegan contains a natural extract with a high tocopherol content (vitamin E). This serves as a natural antioxidant.
- Lecithin for better bioavailability: Omega-3 Vegan contains a special lecithin (a phospholipid) from sunflowers. This serves as a natural emulsifier and enables the mixing of fat and water (see pictures below).
