Kasimir and Lieselotte – Teasel root: DMSO is prepared in a 1:1 ratio (1300 ml of extraction liquid to 1000 g of wild teasel roots).

The unique feature of DMSO is that it can dissolve both water-soluble and fat-soluble substances very effectively and bind them to itself. At the same time, it is completely compatible with all types of body tissue. DMSO also acts as a ‘channel opener’ by penetrating biological membranes. This means it is capable of both effectively extracting the substances from the plant and then transporting them into the body.

Wild teasel (Dipsacus follum L., Dipsacus sylvestris HUDS.)

• Within the honeysuckle family, the wild teasel belongs to the teasel subfamily (Dipsacoideae). Although the inflorescence resembles that of thistles (Asteraceae), this development occurred independently in teasels and thistles. The grouping of many individual flowers into composite flowers is thought to have evolved as an advantage for interaction with certain insects. The wild teasel is a biennial herbaceous plant. In its first year, the plant forms robust rosettes and a tuberous root. It is not until the following year that the teasel grows to a height of up to 200 cm. On the stem, opposite, fused leaves form what is known as the ‘Venus basin’, in which rainwater collects. This basin, which serves as a water source for thirsty creatures such as birds and insects, gives the teasel its name (Dipsacus; ‘dipsa’ is Greek for ‘thirst’). The water from the ‘Venus basin’ is also commonly known as ‘beauty water’ (If you are interested in this special water, please contact our staff). Towards the middle of summer, the teasel develops its inflorescences. The individual flowers of the inflorescence open in colourful purple rings, allowing the teasel to shine in all its beauty.
