HerpesMed® mucoadhesive buccal tablets contain 50 mg acyclovir as the active ingredient. The single application to the gums ensures a reduction in the infection as soon as the first symptoms such as tingling or itching appear.

What is HerpesMed and what is it used for?

HerpesMed contains the active ingredient acyclovir and belongs to a group of medicines called antivirals.

HerpesMed is used in adults with an intact immune system to treat recurrent cold sores (recurrent herpes labialis) caused by the herpes simplex virus. HerpesMed must be applied directly to the gums as soon as the first symptoms (burning, tingling, itching) or signs (redness, swelling) appear.

The virus causes blisters or sores, especially on the lips, but sometimes also on other parts of the face. The viral infection can be activated when the immune system is weakened, e.g. by colds or other infections. Strong sun, stress or menstruation can also trigger the symptoms. HerpesMed inhibits the ability of the virus to multiply and thus ensures that the infection recedes.

If you do not feel better or even worse after 5 days, consult your doctor.

How to use

The recommended dose is one HerpesMed tablet, which is only used once.

Use in children and adolescents: This medicine is not to be used in children and adolescents under 18 years of age.

DO NOT SWALLOW HERPESMED - If you accidentally swallow it, drink a glass of water.

Instructions for correct use

This medicine should be placed on the upper gum directly over an anterior tooth (application to the gum) as soon as the first symptoms or signs of cold sores appear (itching, redness or tingling):

• Before placing the tablet, determine the location on the upper gum above the incisors.
• Place the tablet with a dry finger immediately after removing it from the blister pack. You will notice that the tablet has a curved side and a flat side embossed with "AL21".
• For a better grip, place the curved side on the upper gum, but you can use both sides of the tablet.
• If your mouth is dry, it is recommended to drink some water before using the tablet to moisten the oral mucosa. The tablet can also be used if it sticks to the inside of the lip instead of the gums.

Once placed, the tablet stays in place and slowly dissolves over the course of the day.

How to place HerpesMed?

Keep the tablet in place by pressing lightly on the outside of the upper lip with your finger for 30 seconds to ensure adhesion.

Food and drink can be consumed as usual when HerpesMed is in place. The tablet must not be sucked, chewed or swallowed and any situation that could affect the adhesion of the tablet should be avoided:

• Touching or pressing the already placed tablet
• Chewing gum
• Brushing your teeth during the day when the tablet has already been placed

If the tablet does not adhere or falls off within the first 6 hours, the same tablet should be placed again immediately. If the tablet cannot be placed again, a new tablet should be used. If you accidentally swallow a tablet of HerpesMed, drink a glass of water. If the tablet is swallowed within the first 6 hours of use, it should only be replaced once.

If the tablet falls off after 6 hours or is accidentally swallowed, it should not be replaced. The shape of the tablet may change due to the absorption of saliva to adapt to the shape of your gums.

Ingredients

• What HerpesMed contains - The active ingredient is acyclovir. Each mucoadhesive buccal tablet contains 50 mg acyclovir.
• The other ingredients are: Hypromellose, milk protein concentrate with traces of lactose, sodium dodecyl sulphate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, highly dispersed silicon dioxide.
