Curcuma is a plant species in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). Its name goes back to the ancient Indian term "kunkuman", which alludes to the saffron-yellow colour of the rhizome. It is assumed that the curcuma plant originally comes from the mountainous regions of South Asia. However, its exact origin has not yet been clearly established. Nowadays, turmeric is mainly cultivated on the Indian subcontinent, in China, Indonesia and the South American tropics. The healing properties of the curcuma plant have been known for more than 5,000 years in the Avuryeda medicine of India and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). This makes it one of the oldest known medicinal plants in the world. In Ayurvedic medicine, curcuma is usually mixed with black pepper or ginger. The addition of these two spices further enhances its effect. In Europe and the USA, turmeric was initially only used as a kitchen spice. For 50 years now, its effects on the body and health have been studied here too. Origin: India
