Of the nettle's ingredients, formic acid is the best known. However, the plant is rich in vitamins A, C and minerals (silicic acid) as well as chlorophyll, the typical green pigment. The herb also contains iron, plant enzymes and the amines contained in the stinging hairs (including histamine, serotonin and choline). Stinging nettle is considered a diuretic, especially as a remedy for rheumatism and gout.
- The stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) belongs to the stinging nettle family (Urticaceae). This typical ruderal plant grows everywhere. There are hardly any areas or climatic conditions where it does not thrive. The plant sprouts in spring. It grows up to 140 cm high. Its heart-shaped leaves, which are densely covered with hairs, are typical. The hairs are small tubes with vesicles filled with formic acid at the lower end. When touched, the tips of the stinging hairs break off, allowing the acid to penetrate the skin through the pores and cause small inflammations. For a long time, stinging nettle was considered a useless weed. Today, this misunderstood plant is used in many areas due to its ingredients.
