Vitamin B6 (also known as pyridoxine) belongs to the group of water-soluble vitamins. The body cannot produce the water-soluble vitamin B6 itself, which is why it must be supplied through food. Vitamin B6 is found in both plant and animal foods. However, due to its sensitivity to light and heat, various preparation processes or incorrect storage of our food can lead to the loss of this vitamin. As a component of many enzyme systems, vitamin B6 plays a very important role in the metabolism, especially of protein. Vitamin B6 also has a relevant function in the immune system, as it regulates the immune defence. The intake of vitamin B6 is often insufficient in the 20 - 35 age group and in alcoholics. There may also be an increased requirement during pregnancy and when taking chronic medication.
