Selenium is an essential trace element. As it is usually bound to proteins, protein-rich foods such as meat and fish contain particularly high levels of selenium. Plant-based foods often contain insufficient selenium, particularly when the plants are grown in Central European soils, which are generally low in selenium. Yet this nutrient plays a significant role in our well-being. For example, selenium helps protect cells from oxidative stress and contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system. In selenomethionine, selenium is bound to the amino acid methionine. This compound is incorporated non-specifically into the body’s own proteins and stored there. When these proteins are naturally broken down, the selenium is released again. Selenium in the form of selenomethionine is therefore available to the body continuously and over the long term.
