Potassium is an essential electrolyte. Every single cell in our body needs this mineral to maintain its physiological processes. For example, potassium regulates the fluid balance and controls the electrical processes in the body due to its positive charge. This electrolyte therefore creates the conditions for information to be transferred from cell to cell and is therefore involved in the transmission of signals. Potassium therefore contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system and to normal muscle function (especially heart muscle). Potassium regulates the acidity of the body. It therefore plays a key role in maintaining the acid-base balance. Potassium also contributes to the maintenance of normal blood pressure. Potassium levels are strictly regulated by the body and a deficiency should be compensated for. Risk factors for this include heavy sweating, high alcohol and salt consumption, stress, malnutrition and insufficient fluid intake. Taking water tablets and laxatives, as well as injecting insulin, can also cause a deficiency.
