Pantothenic acid contributes

Pantothenic acid plays an important role in growth and development. As part of coenzyme A, pantothenic acid is involved in over 100 metabolic reactions. Cereals lose vitamin B5 during the milling process. Some of the valuable vitamin B5 is also lost during storage or preparation (heat during cooking).
A deficiency of pantothenic acid can occur as a result of chronic illnesses (e.g. intestinal diseases such as ulcerative colitis), high alcohol consumption or radical slimming diets. Diabetics may be undersupplied, as they excrete more pantothenic acid; the same applies to chronic dialysis patients. Presumably more pantothenic acid is needed under stress. Possible deficiency symptoms can include fading of the hair colour, a weakened immune system, reduced effectiveness of antibodies and poor wound healing. In these cases, supplementation with pantothenic acid can be useful.
