For a long time, the calcareous algae Lithothamnium calcareum was thought to be a coral due to its red-purple colour. However, it is actually a red algae. It thrives in the Atlantic at depths of 8-10 metres and grows very slowly. This gives it enough time to accumulate minerals from the sea. Calcium in particular is contained in very large quantities. This has a particularly high bioavailability and can therefore be optimally absorbed by the body in this natural form. Calcium contributes to normal blood clotting, normal energy metabolism, normal muscle function and normal neurotransmission. Calcium plays a role in the process of cell division and specialisation and is required for the maintenance of normal bones and normal teeth.

This mineral also helps to reduce the loss of bone minerals in post-menopausal women. Low bone mineral density is a risk factor for osteoporotic fractures. Calcium is also necessary for normal bone growth and development in children.
