Like isoleucine and valine, leucine is a branched-chain amino acid. They are often referred to as BCAAs (= Branched Chain Amino Acids) and almost always occur in combination. L-leucine is essential for the human body. It occupies a special place among the amino acids, not only for structural reasons, but also because of its function. Like isoleucine and valine, leucine is important for the regeneration and maintenance of muscle tissue during physical exertion. BCAAs are also known as stress amino acids, as they play an important role in the body's response to stress.
This amino acid performs the following functions:
- Energy source for muscles: Leucine is present in high concentrations in muscle tissue and is essential for muscular endurance. The branched-chain amino acids are unique in that the skeletal muscles can convert these amino acids directly into energy.
- Stressful situations: Physical damage, hunger, peak performance, inflammation, fever, infections and other illnesses are stressful situations for the body. BCAAs play a central role in balancing and maintaining vital functions. They are important in the regulation of protein synthesis and are therefore needed to reduce the breakdown of proteins in the body.
