Curcuma root is also known as saffron or turmeric root due to its colouring power. Curcuma is not only used as a spice, but also as a medicinal plant. In India, turmeric has been used for over 4000 years for its healing properties.
This plant has the following functions:
- Digestive tract: Turmeric can help with pressure and pain in the upper abdomen, bloating or flatulence caused by impaired fat burning. The curcuminoids (including curcumin) stimulate the production of bile, which can improve fat digestion after increased secretion. The essential oils of the spice can soothe the stomach and intestines from a nutritional point of view.
- Free radical scavenger: The ingredients of turmeric protect the cells from free radicals. In the human body, curcumin serves to neutralise aggressive oxygen molecules.
- Joints: Curcuma root is said to be able to inhibit the synthesis of prostaglandins, which trigger inflammation. Curcuma capsules are suitable as a dietary supplement for swelling or morning stiffness of the joints and can also improve walking ability.
