Gall Pharma Crataegus capsules are a food supplement containing 120 mg of hawthorn leaf and flower extract per capsule. Hawthorn supports normal cardiovascular function and helps with poor circulation.
Hawthorn (Crataegus) belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae) and is found in the temperate zones of both the northern and southern hemispheres, as well as in the high mountains of the tropics. Various species of hawthorn are used: Crataegus laevigata (smooth-leaved hawthorn), Crataegus monogyna (single-seeded hawthorn), Crataegus pentagyna (five-seeded hawthorn), Crataegus nigra (black hawthorn) and Crataegus azarolus (azarol hawthorn). Hawthorn grows as a shrub or tree with hard wood, reaching a height of two to eight metres, and is popular for its magnificent white flowers. The branches are heavily thorny, which is why the hawthorn is also known as ‘Hagedorn’ (Middle High German ‘hag’ meaning ‘thorny bush’) and is a popular hedge plant. As a medicinal plant, hawthorn was first mentioned in the European cultural sphere in the first century AD. It is also a component of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Its active constituents include oligomeric procyanidins and flavonoids, which are found particularly in the flowers. The main components are hyperoside and rutoside, alongside glycosylflavones. Other constituents include neutral polysaccharides, triterpenes, small amounts of biogenic amines, sterols, aminopurines and phenolic carboxylic acids. The interaction of these constituents leads, on the one hand, to increased contractile strength of the heart muscle; on the other hand, hawthorn dilates the blood vessels, particularly the coronary arteries, thereby improving the oxygen supply to the heart muscle. Mild circulatory disorders in the heart and reduced pumping capacity (‘age-related heart weakness’), including those associated with high blood pressure, can be positively influenced by the beneficial constituents of hawthorn.
Crataegus 120 mg GPH capsules contain 120 mg of hawthorn extract from leaves and flowers, with a standardised flavonoid content of 2.3 mg, in a hard gelatine capsule.
