Acetyl-L-carnitine is the acetyl derivative of L-carnitine. This substance occurs naturally in human and animal tissues. The content is particularly high in the heart, muscles and in food, especially in meat. Food supplements containing acetyl-L-carnitine can cross the blood-brain barrier and are used to form acetyl groups for the synthesis of acetylcholine (transmitter substance). Acetyl-L-carnitine has therefore found an application as a "nutrient for the brain".
This endogenous substance performs the following functions:
