The unusually long tradition of frankincense in Indian traditional medicine justifies its use in inflammatory diseases. According to Ayurveda, frankincense has a harmonising effect on the human energy cycle. However, the active principle is based on the so-called boswellic acids, which inhibit inflammation.
The decisive factor for the effect appears to be that the so-called boswellic acids inhibit a key enzyme in the inflammatory metabolism, 5-lipoxygenase. This enzyme normally triggers the formation of leukotrienes. These are the body's own metabolic products that are responsible for maintaining chronic inflammation. If the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase is inactivated, no leukotrienes can be produced. This is precisely where boswellic acids come in. They inhibit the activity of the enzyme that causes the inflammation.
Frankincense extract is mainly used for rheumatic diseases, chronic joint inflammation, but also for inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
