The stinging nettle (Urtica dioica L.) and the small stinging nettle (Urtica urens L.) belong to the nettle family (Urticaceae). For a long time, the stinging nettle was regarded as a useless weed. Today, this underappreciated plant is used in many areas due to its constituents (particularly iron, magnesium, potassium, calcium and phosphorus, vitamin C and silicic acid). The stinging nettle is said to have purifying and diuretic properties.
