Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.), also known as liquorice wood, belongs to the Fabaceae family and is native to Europe and Asia. The characteristic ingredient of liquorice root is the sweet-tasting glycyrrhizin. Glycyrrhizin is said to have expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties. In folk medicine, liquorice root is used as a laxative for intestinal disorders.
