Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.), also known as liquorice wood, belongs to the pea family (Fabaceae) and is native to Europe and Asia. The characteristic constituent of liquorice root is glycyrrhizin, which has a sweet taste. Glycyrrhizin is said to have expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties. In folk medicine, liquorice root is used as a laxative for intestinal disorders.
