In folk medicine, the ripe and dried seeds of flax (linseed) are used, which are said to be a natural laxative for constipation, as they stimulate bowel movements and thus have a laxative effect. The seed coat contains plenty of mucilage, which is made up of sugars such as xylose, galactose and galacturonic acid. The seeds also contain fibre, protein and oils (omega-3 fatty acids)
