The tea plant has been cultivated in China for several thousand years. The plant’s key constituents include numerous vitamins, minerals, tannins, caffeine and catechins. Catechins are credited with most of the plant’s health-promoting properties. Catechins are also responsible for the tea’s bitter taste. As well as having a positive effect on the heart and circulatory system, green tea is also said to possess antioxidant properties. The tannins it contains help to soothe an upset stomach and gut.
