The main active ingredients in gentian root are the secoiridoid bitter compounds. Amarogentin, which is stored in the root bark, is primarily responsible for the bitter taste. Even the ancient Romans used gentian root to treat gastrointestinal complaints, as well as bloating, flatulence and loss of appetite, and swore by its beneficial effects.
