The main ingredients in gentian root are secoiridoid bitter substances. Amarogentin, which is stored in the root bark, is primarily responsible for the bitter flavour. Even the ancient Romans used gentian root for gastrointestinal complaints such as bloating, flatulence and loss of appetite and swore by its positive effects.
