Horsetail is used as a diuretic due to its high silica content. Furthermore, field horsetail has diuretic properties without affecting or altering the electrolyte balance. Furthermore, the herb is used to treat rheumatic complaints, chronic coughs and gout. In cases of inflammation in the mouth and throat, the plant can also be used for gargling and as a mouthwash.
