The elm tree (Ulmus minor Mill.) is a member of the elm family (Ulmaceae). The most important ingredient of elm is its mucilage. It also contains tannins (phlobaphenes), bitter substances and flavonoids. In folk medicine, elm bark is used to treat inflamed stomach and intestinal mucous membranes, inflammation of the mouth and throat, diarrhoea and indigestion. It is also said to have an astringent and diuretic effect
