The barberry (Berberis vulgaris L.) belongs to the Berberidaceae family. The most important constituents of barberry root include alkaloids such as berberine and jatrorrhizine, tannins, resin and wax. The peeled bark of the barberry root is used to produce barberry root bark extract. It is said to strengthen the gallbladder and other digestive organs, act as a diuretic, counteract sluggish digestion and help regulate blood pressure and heart rate. The extract is rich in berberine (12–15 per cent), which is said to have astringent properties. It is soothing for damaged skin and reduces blemishes. Barberry root bark extract clarifies and protects the skin and is ideal for the care of acne-prone and blemished skin.
