True valerian (Valeriana officinalis) belongs to the valerian family (Valerianaceae). In addition to the essential oil, which is responsible for the characteristic smell of the rootstock, valerian contains valepotriates and alkaloids. Valerian is said to have a positive effect on the nervous system and to act as a sedative and sleep aid. It is also believed to have restorative properties.
