The cooling ointment is also known as cold cream, cooling ointment, Unguentum leniens, Walrat ointment, Cérat de Galien. In this lipophilic ointment made from beeswax and hardened peanut oil, the ointment breaks down when heated on the skin and the water that escapes evaporates, absorbing energy. This results in a slight cooling effect. The cooling ointment is also valued for its excellent tolerability, as it contains no emulsifiers or preservatives.
