As far back as ancient China, Rome and Greece, people recognised the beneficial effects of the peony, noting that the flowers and roots were said to have antispasmodic, anaesthetic, sedative and diaphoretic properties. Peony blossoms are also said to have beneficial effects on gout and rheumatic complaints, respiratory and cardiac ailments, nervous disorders and gastritis.
