The genus paprika (Capsicum), also known as cayenne pepper, chilli pepper or chilli pepper, belongs to the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The substance responsible for the spiciness is called capsaicin. Capsaicinoids have vitalising functions in the areas of metabolism, cardiovascular system and digestion. The liquid preparations of cayenne pepper can also be used as a gargle for sore throats and hoarseness or externally for muscle and joint pain.
