Lotus flowers (Nelumbo), also known as lotus, are the only genus in the lotus family (Nelumbonaceae). In traditional Chinese medicine, lotus seeds are used, amongst other things, to treat diarrhoea, loss of appetite, impotence, insomnia and irritability. They are also said to have beneficial effects on bleeding, haemorrhoids, palpitations and digestive problems.
