Muira Puama, also known as the potency tree, is a plant species of the sandalwood order (Santalales) and belongs to the Olacaceae family. The pharmaceutically used drug Muira puama lignum, the potency wood, is obtained from the wood and roots of the tree. Potency wood was already used by the Indians as an aphrodisiac. Aphrodisiacs are named after the Greek goddess Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. They are substances that stimulate or restore sex drive and potency.
