Hildegard von Bingen liked to use masterwort in her herbal medicine and described it as antibacterial, calming, anti-bloating, diuretic and expectorant. The ingredients of masterwort are essential oil, bitter substances, tannins, gum, resin, imperatorin, coumarins, furanocoumarins, ostin, ostruthin, ostrutol, oxipeucedanin, peucedanin and starch.
