The manna ash, also known as the bread of heaven, is a plant species of the ash genus. It owes its name to the brownish, slightly bitter sap that oozes from scratched branches and twigs and hardens quickly. The sap contains the sweet-tasting alcohol mannitol as its main ingredient. It also contains D-glucose, fructose and resins. Manna is known to be a laxative for gentle bowel evacuation. Swedish herbal mixtures also often contain manna.
