The nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans), which belongs to the nutmeg family (Myristicaceae), is a bushy, evergreen tree that grows up to 12 metres high, bears yellow fruit and contains one seed each, which is encased in a bright red, fleshy seed coat. This seed coat (aril) is also known as mace or mace. Dried or ground, the blossom is used to flavour pastries, meat dishes and some types of sausage and is said to be particularly beneficial for digestion in the case of gastrointestinal problems
