The kola tree produces the popular kola seeds. More precisely, the dried seed kernels are used, freed from the seed coat. Cola seeds are said to be stimulating as they are rich in purine alkaloids (caffeine, theobromine) and catechin substances (cola tannin). Cola extracts are therefore often used as a tonic to combat tiredness and drowsiness, as some reports claim that they increase the heart rate.
