The violet root, also known as iris root or tooth root, belongs to the iris family (Iridaceae). As well as having a pain-relieving effect, the root is also said to have an expectorant effect. In folk medicine, preparations made from the root are used primarily as a flavouring, expectorant and mucilaginous agent for colds. It is also said to have beneficial effects on bronchitis, bronchial asthma, poor circulation, flatulence, headaches, migraines and inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract.
