Iceland moss is a plant species from the lichen family (Parmeliaceae). Mucilage is regarded as a particularly important ingredient of Iceland moss. The plant also contains bitter lichen acids, iodine and various vitamins. In Nordic countries, Iceland moss was used as a household remedy for lung diseases and loss of appetite. Today it is mainly used for coughs, hoarseness and mucous membrane disorders.
