Harpagophytum (Harpagophytum procumbens) belongs to the sesame family (Pedaliaceae). The plant has a positive effect on rheumatism, joint inflammation and arthritis. Harpagosides and other valuable compounds (flavanoids) in the root also have a favourable effect on the musculoskeletal system as well as the digestive tract. The plant is therefore said to have anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and appetite-stimulating properties.
