The plant Hamamelis virginiana L., also known as witch hazel, belongs to the witch hazel family (Hamamelidaceae). The name ‘witch hazel’ comes from the fact that, depending on the weather, this plant can already be in flower in the middle of a bare and cold winter. Witch hazel was first recognised as a medicinal plant by the indigenous peoples, who described it as having haemostatic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also said to be beneficial for diarrhoea, which is attributed to its active constituents such as tannins (hamamelitannin), flavonoids and essential oils.
