Frankincense is the resin of the Indian frankincense tree (Boswellia serrata). The resin has been used as an important remedy in the traditional Indian natural medicine of "Ayurveda" (knowledge of healthy living) under the name "Sallaki" for over 3,000 years. The resin is used in this medicine for a number of inflammatory diseases. Today it seems certain that the boswellic acids inhibit inflammatory processes. Both the ground raw resin and extracts are used for preparations. However, dry extracts are most commonly used, which are said to have a positive effect on rheumatism, gout, respiratory diseases, as well as stomach and intestinal complaints and migraines.
