The hawthorn (Crataegus) belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae). It contains oligomeric procyanidins and flavonoids, which are mainly found in the flowers. The main components are hyperoside and rutoside, as well as glycosylflavones. Hawthorn has a variety of effects on the heart and blood vessels. The plant is also said to promote blood circulation and dilate blood vessels. Crataegus preparations are therefore suitable for high blood pressure, fatigue and circulatory weakness due to summer heat and for strengthening the heart.
