Comfrey (Symphytum officinale), also known as common comfrey, comfrey root, black comfrey or wound healing comfrey, is a member of the borage family (Boraginaceae). The name "comfrey" comes from Old High German and refers to its use. "Bein" (leg) referred to bones of all kinds, while "Well" describes the overgrowth of plant wounds and, in a broader sense, the fusion of bones. It is used externally for bruises, sprains and strains. Preparations from the root are mainly used here, but also from the herb.
